Introduction

Around 2,000 years ago, in the city of Jerusalem, a woman was about to be stoned to death. Why? Because she had slept with a man she was not married to and had been caught in the act. This was against Jewish law and so the scribes and Pharisees had determined to put her to death as punishment. What happened next? Mercifully her life was spared, because of a man named Jesus: After the Scribes and Pharisees asked Him what should become of her, Jesus said to them “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her”. One by one, being convicted by their own conscience, they left her alone with Jesus, who then said to her “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more” (John 8:1-11).

Jesus told this woman to “sin no more”. But what had she actually done wrong? All she did was sleep with a man. She hadn’t killed anyone. Surely this woman wasn’t harming anyone else in what she was doing. It may have been wrong according to the strict Jewish culture of the time, but this is far removed from the 21st century! She was probably quite a good person really. This is what  most in the western world think today."I give to charity," "I look after my family, I’ve never killed anyone... I’m a good person".

Do you too think you are good? 

​

God does not measure sin as we do. The Bible says that all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (Romans 3:23). Jesus Himself said, there is none good but one, that is, God (Mark 10:18). Imagine it was you to whom Jesus said: 

​

“He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her”. 

​​

Would you, just like the scribes and Pharisees, realise by your own conscience that you are unable to throw a stone at anyone else because you yourself have done things wrong before? If you have ever stolen, or told a lie, or treated someone unjustly, you have fallen short of the perfect law of God. Every one of us has done something wrong at least once in our lives, and because of this, we are deserving of death, because the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23).

But why did Jesus let this woman go free if she had sinned? If the wages of sin is death, surely Jesus should have let the Scribes and Pharisees stone her. He alone was without sin among them; He had the right to cast the first stone! Many of us have this idea that God wants to punish us. Subconsciously we feel that God is angry with all of His creation, looking and waiting to catch them out in their sin so that He can pour out His wrath and punish them for all eternity. But the exact opposite is true! From Genesis to Revelation, God shows us that it’s His desire that all men and women should be saved and come to the knowledge of Him. God created us in His likeness (Genesis 5:1) and to be in fellowship with Him. But in the Garden of Eden, after Adam and Eve sinned, they hid from God’s presence. God’s desperation at man’s disobedience and the subsequent separation from Him is evident when the Lord God calls to Adam saying:

 

“Where art thou?” (Genesis 3:9).

We read in Genesis 5:6 that because of man’s wickedness, God regretted having made man and was ‘grieved’ in His heart about it! Why? Because God’s desire is for all to be saved, and not perish (2 Peter 3:9).

For God so loved the world!

​​

In this 2,000-year-old historical account set in the temple of Jerusalem, we see Jesus’ heart for all mankind when He says to the woman “Neither do I condemn thee”. He wants her to go free, but he also urges her to “sin no more”. Why? Because sin is what separates us from Him! This is why Jesus came to the earth some 2,000 years ago. Did you know that the old Testament foretold the coming of Jesus, thousands of years before it happened? God knew exactly how, when, and where Jesus would be born, be put to death, and then rise again 3 days later. This was God’s incredible plan to bring us back to Him, that we should not be eternally separated from Him because of our sin, but instead live forever with Him. When Jesus died on the cross in a place outside Jerusalem called Golgotha, He was taking upon Himself the judgment and wrath of God that we should have faced. There has to be a penalty paid for our sin. But in His great love for us, God was willing to pay the fine for us, that we need not bear the penalty ourselves. For scripture says that:

 

"Even while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us". (Romans 5:8) 

 

God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins (1 John 4:9-10).

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).

​

Great, so why do we need to concern ourselves about any of this? It sounds like God has got it all covered. Let’s read on further from John 3:16… 

​​

"He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God" (John 3:18).

​

"If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (Romans 10:9).

So, what must I do to be saved?

​

To be saved, you need to believe on Jesus in your heart, and confess Him as your Lord: 

​​

"If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (Romans 10:9).

​

If you do not, you will be eternally separated from God. You will be condemned because of your wrongdoing. It’s only by Jesus that you can be saved, not through any other god, religion, or manmade philosophy. "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6).  "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent" (John 17:3). After His encounter with the woman, Jesus again addressed the crowd in the temple, and said to them, "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12).

 

When you give your heart to Jesus, your life will never be the same! You will no longer walk in darkness, but walk in the Light. 

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: 

 

"...old things are passed away; behold, all things are  become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17).

​

The Lord’s second coming to this earth is fast approaching, and our prayer is that you will not delay, but seek the Lord today! If you ask Him into your life and confess Him as your Lord and Saviour, you will be saved. You will be washed from all your sin and have the blessed hope and assurance of living eternally with Him! If you would like to give your life to Jesus, I urge you to reach out to Him, ask for forgiveness for your sins, and accept Him as Lord of your life. If you are not sure what to say, you may like to pray how Jesus taught us: 

 

Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. 

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 

Give us this day our daily bread. 

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, 

and the power, and the glory, forever.
